"Whoever survives a test, whatever it may be, must tell the story. That is his duty'-Elie Wiesel"(9).
The author of the novel Night offers one of the most important items of information for a book regarding survivors. He is a Holocaust survivor and has told his story through his book. His call is for other survivors of accidents, tragedies, and life situations to come forward with their stories so the world can hear of them. There is so much to be learned about the human spirit through survivors because a person is taken down to the core of who they are in tough times. That is why The Survivors Club by Ben Sherwood is such a compelling book.

"It's a strange feeling. Everywhere I go, I'm the first. [...] The first guy to grow crops on Mars. First, first, first" (99)!
To be the first to do anything on a whole different planet is an impressive accomplishment. However, it is not out of a free choice that Mark Watney is the first to do so many things. He accidentally is on Mars. Still, it is incredible to think that eventually someone in real life will become the first person to do these things just like the first person to step on the Moon. It may not be for a while put technologically it is a possibility.

"You cannot defeat your enemies until you know who they are"(33).
This quote is set on a castle door early on in the book. It speaks to Alex and he believes that it is actually a warning for times to come. Soon after bad things do start happening and he must figure out who his enemies are just like the quote says. It is clearly foreshadowing placed by the author and it does a good job setting up the rest of the story because it takes Alex so long to find his true enemy. Then, the action takes off and is suspenseful the rest of the story.

“My healing, I said, helped me to open myself up to the beauty of the world, the beauty of all cultures and all spiritual traditions”(188).
Living in a rural community in a northern state is a great place to live. However, there are drawbacks because of how secluded Salmon, Idaho really is. This quote reminded me of the view I have of other minorities and cultural areas. I do not dislike them, I just do not feel entirely comfortable around them because I have never gotten a chance to be around them for long. It is hard to admit, but I know that I place a judgement or stereotype on many people before I even know them. Reading this book opened my mind to that fact and while I know I am not a bad person because of my experiences, I know there is a lot I can do better when encountering other people. In the future, I hope to get to travel to many cultures so that I can be more comfortable and open to possibilities and differences in how we live.

“In the end, it is they who claim us. And we who belong to them” (354).
This quote is important to me because I have spent so much time in the outdoors. I have always loved the forests, rivers, and mountains that I can go out and experience. I really do believe that nature has power over people because of how vast and unknown it is. When you go out in the woods, you are at its mercy and can only do so much for your own safety. In the future, I hope to continue being able to go out and hike and spend time with friends and family out in nature although the times currently restrict much of that. Still, even during the quarantine I have been able to go out and spend time out in my favorite place to be.

“Though the captives’ resistance was dangerous, through such acts, dignity was preserved and through dignity, life itself.” (206)
The rebellions that the captives in POW camps carried out were important to me. They did not create a lot of trouble but were able to maintain self-respect and hope. I think this shows a lot about the human spirit and how we can make it through any struggle. I have been through a big struggle in the last year and so I think this speaks to me because of what I went through. This quote is also neat to me because it shows how prisoners were able to survive in camps. People that are held captive often loose their dignity and with that what makes them human. In this story, it is the perseverance of the men and the strength of each other that got them through the war.
